STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I photograph to never forget. As a child, I remember receiving my first camera for Christmas. It was loaded with 110 film which was developed into 3x5 color photographs. I clearly recall imagining the endless possibilities I could achieve with this small, pink and black machine. This camera evolved over the years into the forms of disposable cameras on school field trips, waterproof cameras at the pool, borrowing Mom’s panoramic camera, and the fun every Friday night in high school using the ever quick and easy Polaroid. Looking back, those pictures are filled with my friends throughout the years, family, pets, past loves, senior prom, vacations, and nights out with the girls. To this day, I cherish the images captured by these cameras. They are the recording of my personal history. They are my window into the past. I have developed ways of documenting future memories and those things to which I react while producing a composition beyond simple happenstance. Art is the application of skill to those things tasteful to the artist. My tastes lie with familiar, yet stimulating objects, such as the feminine form or the snaking of a shoelace, physical details of people that project their inner being, and those useful and common items like blue jeans or a laundry basket. As an artist and photographer, my inspiration lies in recording those unforgettable aspects with my composition of their lines, shapes, and values. My pictures involve general subjects, thus, my expressive statement through my work is simply to promote those things that we may take for granted and do not fully regard each and every day. By using strong contrast or color, my personal expression and uplifting the everyday becomes art and the ordinary is glorified. My goal, through design, is for something personal and important to me to become meaningful to my viewer and to echo within them a thing universal. My appreciation for photography, as a means of expression, traces back to some of my earliest memories. I am always the person eager, camera in hand, to produce photographic compositions that will be remembered by all who view them. |
